Not Vital. Snowball Wall

Snowball Wall (2025) es una instalación creada por Not Vital (n. 1948, Sent, Suiza) para las escaleras del  MALI. La obra consiste en una acción en la que el artista lanza bolas de yeso contra el muro en una especie de “guerra de nieve”. Vital trabaja con yeso porque, en cierto momento de su proceso de hidratación, el material parece transformarse en nieve: no solo por su apariencia, sino también en su textura y en la forma en que cede al tacto. Al impactar, las bolas dejan impresiones texturadas sobre la superficie.

 

Su práctica, inspirada en un estilo de vida nómada y en sus experiencias de viaje, reflexiona sobre los hábitats, la naturaleza y los animales, así como sobre la tensión entre escultura y arquitectura. En el límite entre lo abstracto y lo figurativo, su obra se distingue por una relación íntima con materiales como yeso, acero, mármol, cerámica y materia orgánica. A menudo colabora con artesanos de diversas tradiciones: desde forjadores de acero en Pekín y sopladores de vidrio en Murano, hasta plateros tuareg y fabricantes de papel en Bután. La fisicalidad de su enfoque, sumada a una comprensión innata de las propiedades esenciales de los materiales, da lugar a obras visualmente desafiantes que suelen desestabilizar por su escala e intensidad.

 

La intervención Snowball Wall en el MALI se presenta en el marco de la exposición ¿Qué hace el viento cuando no sopla? organizada por proyectoamil en Av. Pedro de Osma 409, Barranco.

 

Sobre el artista

Not Vital (n. 1948, Sent, Suiza) ha viajado y expuesto internacionalmente desde la década de 1970, viviendo entre Estados Unidos, Níger, Italia, Brasil y China. Su obra ha sido presentada en numerosas exposiciones internacionales, incluyendo la 49ª Bienal de Venecia (2001), curada por Harald Szeemann, y la 17ª Bienal Internacional de Arquitectura (2021). Entre sus principales exposiciones individuales se cuentan las realizadas en Kunsthalle Bielefeld, Alemania (2005); The Arts Club of Chicago, Estados Unidos (2006); UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, Pekín, China (2011); Museo d’arte Mendrisio, Suiza (2014–15); Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield, Reino Unido (2016); Ateneum Art Museum, Helsinki, Finlandia (2018–19); y Museum der Moderne, Salzburgo, Austria (2020–21). Actualmente reside y trabaja en Sent y Río de Janeiro.

Snowball Wall (2025) is a site-specific installation conceived by Not Vital for the staircase of Museo de Arte de Lima – MALI. The work unfolds as a performance in which the artist hurls plaster balls against the wall in a kind of snowball fight. Vital gravitates towards plaster because, at a certain stage of its hydration, the material seems to become snow—not only in appearance but also in texture and responsiveness. Upon impact, the balls shatter, leaving textured imprints on the surface.

His practice is deeply shaped by his nomadic lifestyle and global experiences, reflecting on habitats, nature, animals, and the interplay between sculpture and architecture. Moving along the boundary between abstraction and figuration, his work is distinguished by an intimate relationship with materials such as plaster, steel, marble, ceramic, and organic matter. Vital frequently collaborates with master craftsmen worldwide—from Beijing steel-chasers and Murano glassblowers, to Tuareg silversmiths and Bhutanese papermakers. The physicality of his process, combined with an intuitive understanding of each material’s essential properties, results in visually striking works that often destabilize through their monumental scale and presence.

Snowball Wall at MALI is presented within the context of the artist’s exhibition What Does the Wind Do When It Doesn’t Blow? organized by proyectoami at Av. Pedro de Osma 409, Barranco. 

 

About the artist

Not Vital (b. 1948, Sent, Switzerland) has traveled and exhibited internationally since the 1970s, living between the United States, Niger, Italy, Brazil, and China.  Vital’s work has been featured in major international exhibitions, including the 49th Venice Biennale (2001), curated by Harald Szeemann, and the 17th International Architecture Biennale (2021). Significant solo exhibitions have been held at Kunsthalle Bielefeld, Germany (2005); The Arts Club of Chicago, United States (2006); UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, China (2011); Museo d’arte Mendrisio, Switzerland (2014–15); Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield, United Kingdom (2016); Ateneum Art Museum, Helsinki, Finland (2018–19); and Museum der Moderne, Salzburg, Austria (2020–21). He currently lives and works in Sent and Rio de Janeiro.
